Phase I
Fjord districts
Valleys and long fjord shores, where farms, harbours and small towns give the north its ordinary working texture.
Phase II
Geothermal ground
Days on active volcanic terrain east of the fjords: lava fields, steam ground and lake basins, with walking chosen for conditions rather than checklists.
Phase III
Highland edge
Where summer access allows, travel to the interior margins of black sand and braided rivers, with route decisions made on the day by the driving team.
Who it suits
Travellers comfortable with long driving days and genuinely remote ground.
Demands and honest caveats
Unsealed tracks and river crossings in summer; limited services in the interior; winter routes assessed daily and sometimes closed.

Geographic context
The north of Iceland turns away from the busiest southern circuit. Wide agricultural valleys open to the Greenland Sea, and behind them the ground rises into the volcanic interior of black sand, moss-covered lava and braided glacial rivers.
